Better systems for a changed world

The world has changed, and we all feel it.

When systems determine outcomes more than individuals, the choice of systems becomes vital. A system can help us show up, or it can reinforce our stereotypes and biases. It can ignore whole realms of information, or it can help us see the world more fully.

We need to talk about what we don’t want, but also define better what we do want. We need to talk about resilience, trust, respect, adaptiveness, voice, empowerment.

Are we ready?

Rakesh %22Rootsman Rak%22, UK

” use_front_icon=”on” front_background_color=”#DCE6F7″ back_body=”

Description: Many of us have implemented or used sociocracy in well-established groups or projects where we have time to train people to get them up to speed. But what about for short-term projects, where we do not necessarily have so much time. Rakesh has used sociocracy in many such situations, from one-day conferences to residential training courses. Let’s explore ideas of how to use sociocracy effectively to co-create events.

Bio: Rakesh is an experienced low-impact living designer and teacher from the UK, specialising in permaculture, collaborative working, sociocracy, food forests and other low-maintenance food growing systems, etc. He has supported several community projects in London and throughout Europe and has taught in many countries around the world. How Sociocracy is used by the Peoples Party of Washington

Jim Lee, USA

” use_front_icon=”on” front_background_color=”#DCE6F7″ back_body=”

Description: Sociocracy has been demonstrated to be a highly effective and efficient decision-making process, especially where a group, such as the Peoples Party of Washington State, is mostly committed to a shared goal or purpose. We will also present the process we use to select and prioritize the policy planks in our party platform using a highly democratic, near consensus model that engages all willing party members.

Bio: Jim Lee is a member of the Coordinators Circle of the Peoples Party of Washington State. He introduced the concept of Sociocracy to the organization, which has adopted it as their primary decision-making process. Jim is a lifelong ‘amateur’ political philosopher and has long been involved in public policy work and actions for democracy, economic justice and the environment, several of which he has organized or led.

How I implemented Sociocracy in my organization: a theatre company

Yannis Camus, France

” use_front_icon=”on” front_background_color=”#DCE6F7″ back_title=”Yannis Camus” back_body=”

Description: I never studied management during my studies… When I created my first professional theatre company, I wanted it to be horizontal with no chief, no hierarchy. But somehow it didn’t work as I was expecting it to work despite my very positive intentions. You can hear what happened next and how I implanted Sociocracy in my second theatre company.

Bio: Yannis Camus (Rennes- France) started his professional life by creating a theatre company in France where he lives. Because at one point everything went wrong and conflicts were all around, he looked for a solution and found Sociocracy on his way. It took him about 5 years to transform his company in a sociocratic way, trying to respect the theory as well as possible. He then decided to become a trainer and consultant

Egg or hen – Sociocracy: an organizational approach or a manifestation of a mindset?

Armin Sieber, Switzerland

Evan Miller, USA

” use_front_icon=”on” front_background_color=”#DCE6F7″ back_body=”

Description: In 2014 my business hit a wall and we needed to reinvent how we worked. I fell in love with Holacracy, but ran into a brick wall when I tried to get buy-in from my leadership team. This presentation will explore how we did it.

Sociocracy and Anarchism

Eric Tolson, Mexico

” use_front_icon=”on” front_background_color=”#DCE6F7″ back_body=”

Description: I first approached sociocracy because it seemed to me like one way to put anarchist self-governance principles in a concrete and actionable manner, without getting too tangled in the muddy waters of discourse and ideology. In this presentation, I hope to expose the ways in which I think sociocracy already offers a way of anarchist praxis, and also explore together some ways in which it could do so more robustly

Bio: Eric was born and raised in the Valley of Anahuac, Mexico City, where he currently lives. Eric committed to social transformation and revolution during highschool while forming a set of cooperatives with his peers. A friend of paradox and play, Eric identifies as a professional anarchist.

Reiterating Sociocratic Models for Culturally-Competent Inclusion, Accessibility, Accountability, and Transparency

Sophie Xu, USA

” use_front_icon=”on” front_background_color=”#DCE6F7″ back_body=”

Description: We will explore how to center historically and currently marginalized voices — especially those of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) — in existing and innovative sociocratic framework. To do so, we will grapple with and examine the births of sociocracy, its linkage to whiteness, and how to render its core, identifying, and groundbreaking norms (e.g. consent-based decision-making) culturally-competent.

Bio: Sophie Xu (she/her/hers) is a co-founder of the Youth Power Coalition (YPC). A self-proclaimed bibliophile, she loves publicly verbalizing (through written or spoken media) against injustices and weaving community on all scales. She values empathy and allying with marginalized-groups-centered movements to sustainably dismantle the kyriarchy: the aggregate ongoing oppressive/privileging social constructs and systems.

Circular Hierarchy and Dual Accountability: Starting up Sociocracy in a religious nonprofit

Alex Rodríguez, USA

” use_front_icon=”on” front_background_color=”#DCE6F7″ back_body=”

Description: This presentation tells the story of how a newly forming North American Tantric Buddhist sangha (community), Bhumisparsha, came to adopt Sociocracy as its governance structure. As a group committed to non-harm, with many having witnessed grievous misconduct in other North American Buddhist sanghas, the group turned to sociocracy as a way to address a structural tension inherent in the organization’s purpose.

Bio: Alex W. Rodríguez (he/him) is a writer, organizer, and trombonist living on occupied Nipmuc and Pocomtuc land (aka Holyoke, Massachusetts). A Fast, Effective, and Fun Way to Learn (and Teach) Proposal-Forming in Sociocracy

Diana Leafe Christian, USA

” use_front_icon=”on” front_background_color=”#DCE6F7″ back_body=”

Description: I’ll demonstrate an effective, engaging way to show how Proposal-Forming works when teaching it to others. On a template everyone can see on a large screen, someone types Aspects of the issue into one column in the template while these are being brainstormed, and later does the same with specific Proposal Ideas. Doing it this way makes learning Proposal-Forming obvious, easy, and fun. We’ll do it in the workshop.

Bio: Diana Leafe Christian teaches sociocracy to intentional communities and member-led groups. Author of Creating a Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow Ecovillages and Intentional Communities, she speaks at conferences, offers consultations, and leads workshops and online courses.

We all get up in the morning trying to make the world a better place. But we also know that our small actions alone, as important as they are, are not enough. Things are complex, and whatever we do is a choice. Systems matter.

The only way to change anything is to change things on a systemic level, which requires the cooperation of people, groups of people, and groups of groups of people!

What are the systems that are non-oppressive, non-bureaucratic, non-hierarchical, non-misogynistic, and anti-racist?

We in Sociocracy For All see sociocracy as one of the systems that help us see more fully and compassionately in complex situations, and to find ways of working that work for more people, not only some. We’re well aware that sociocracy in itself is not a magic fix, but is embedded in a mosaic of systems that help us live in alignment with our values.

At this conference, we will compare notes!

  • What has been working for you?
  • What role do you think sociocracy could or will play in your organization?
